Who we are
Our Mission
The M.O.M. Project (Mending Our Mistakes) exists to support mothers who have lost custody or are at risk of losing custody. We provide trauma-informed resources, peer support, and compassionate advocacy to help women rebuild their lives, reconnect with their children, and strengthen family bonds.
Our Story
The M.O.M. Project was born out of lived experience and a deep understanding of what happens when mothers face custody loss. Too often, women are left isolated, stigmatized, and silenced. Traditional systems — from DHS to court compliance programs — focus on evaluation and punishment rather than true healing.
We believe no mother should have to walk this road alone. The M.O.M. Project is a response to that gap: a safe, nonjudgmental community where mothers can find hope, connection, and the tools to move forward.
Our Vision & Values
We envision a future where no mother feels erased by custody loss, and every family has the opportunity to heal and thrive.
Empowerment Through Self-Love
Healing begins with embracing one’s worth. By fostering resilience and self-compassion, mothers can become the strong, grounded role models their children deserve.
Breaking Generational Cycles
We are committed to helping families rewrite their stories, replacing cycles of trauma and loss with legacies of stability and hope.
Presence Over Perfection
Motherhood is more than a custody arrangement. It’s about showing up in healthy, sustainable ways — and we honor every path that allows mothers to be present in their children’s lives.
Accountability with Compassion
We believe growth comes when accountability is paired with empathy. We support mothers in taking responsibility for their healing without shame or judgment.
Lived Experience Leadership
Our work is guided by those who have walked this path. We honor the voices and wisdom of mothers who know firsthand what it means to lose and fight for their children.
Community & Connection
True healing happens in community. We build bridges between mothers, children, guardians, and support networks so no family has to walk this road alone.
What We Do
The M.O.M. Project is building programs designed to meet mothers where they are:
Peer Support Circles – Safe, nonjudgmental groups led by women with lived experience.
One-on-One Guidance – Compassionate support to help mothers navigate custody, court processes, and reunification.
Resource Navigation – Connections to housing, therapy, and legal aid for families in transition.
Education & Advocacy – Books, workshops, and outreach to raise awareness of the many forms of maternal absence.
Who We Serve
We serve mothers facing custody struggles in all forms — whether through divorce, guardianship, DHS involvement, or voluntary placement. We are independent from DHS or any evaluative agency. Our doors are open to every mother, no matter her past or present circumstances.
Our Leadership
The M.O.M. Project was founded by Rachel Tanner, a legal assistant and advocate who has walked the path of maternal separation herself. Rachel brings both professional experience in family law and personal insight into the realities of custody loss. Her story — and the stories of countless women like her — fuels this work.
